TO ALL RESIDENTS OF PUTNAM COUNTY:
ARE YOU AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING DEDUCTIONS YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO RECEIVE ON YOUR PROPERTY TAX STATEMENTS? THESE DEDUCTIONS HELP LOWER THE AMOUNT OF TAXES YOU PAY EACH YEAR.
MOBILE HOME:
EXEMPTIONS NEED TO BE FILED BETWEEN JANUARY 15 AND MARCH 2 OF THE YEAR THE DEDUCTION IS TO BE EFFECTIVE. FOR THE MORTGAGE DEDUCTION YOU WILL NEED TO BRING IN PROOF OF YOUR PAYMENTS.
MORTGAGE: IT MUST BE RECORDED IN THE PUTNAM COUNTY RECORDER’S OFFICE UNLESS IT IS FOR A MOBILE HOME. MOBILE HOME YOU MUST BRING IN PROOF OF LOAN
STANDARD DEDUCTION HOMESTEAD CREDIT: MUST LIVE IN THE HOUSE TO RECEIVE
OVER 65 YEARS OLD: TOTAL REAL ESTATE OR MOBILE HOME ASSESSED VALUE CAN NOT EXCEED 144,000 AND THE COMBINED ANNUAL ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME OF THE APPLICANT AND ANY INDIVIDUALS SHARING OWNERSHIP CAN NOT EXCEED $25,000. MUST BRING IN A COPY OF LAST YEAR’S (2006) 1040 FORM AND APPLICANT MUST HAVE BEEN 65 YEARS OLD BY DECEMBER 31, 2006
BLIND: APPLICANT’S INCOME MAY NOT EXCEED $17,000 MUST BRING COPY OF 1040 FORM AS PROOF OF INCOME AND A LETTER FROM A DOCTOR STATING APPLICANT IS LEGALLY BLIND
DISABILITY: APPLICANT’S INCOME MAY NOT EXCEED $17,000 MUST BRING COPY OF 1040 FORM AS PROOF OF INCOME AND A LETTER FROM A DOCTOR STATING APPLICANT IS UNABLE TO ENGAGE IN ANY SUBSTANTIAL GAINFUL ACTIVITY BY REASON OF PHYSICAL OR MENTAL IMPAIRMENT WHICH CAN BE EXPECTED TO RESULT IN DEATH OR HAS LASTED OR CAN BE EXPECTED TO LAST FOR A CONTINUOUS PERIOD OF NOT LESS THAN TWELVE MONTHS OR YOU CAN BRING IN YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY QUALIFICATION PAPER INSTEAD OF THE LETTER FROM YOUR DOCTOR
VETERANS: CONTACT WILL NEIBOLD, VETERANS OFFICER, LOCATED AT COURTHOUSE ANNEX ON LIBERTY STREET TO SEE IF ELIGIBLE (765-653-5417); VETERANS OVER AGE 62: MUST BE CURRENTLY RECEIVING A VETERANS DEDUCTION AND BRING PROOF OF DATE OF BIRTH.
FILING DEADLINE: JUNE 10, 2007. THE DEDUCTIONS WILL APPEAR ON YOUR 2007 PAYABLE 2008 TAX STATEMENTS. TO RECEIVE THE MORTGAGE OR HOMESTEAD DEDUCTION, YOU MUST HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THE HOUSE BY FEBRUARY 29, 2007 OR HAD YOUR MORTGAGE WITH THE LENDING INSTITUTION BY FEBRUARY 29, 2007. DEDUCTIONS FILED AFTER JUNE 10, 2007 WILL BE FOR 2008 PAYABLE 2009.
REMINDER: IF YOU HAVE REFINANCED YOUR MORTGAGE YOU NEED TO RE-FILE YOUR MORTGAGE DEDUCTION. IF YOU DO NOT, YOU WILL LOSE THE DEDUCTION.
IMPORTANT:
IF YOU HAVE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR PROPERTY YOU WILL NEED TO RE-FILE YOUR DEDUCTIONS SUCH AS NAME CHANGE, ASSESSMENT CHANGES, OWNERSHIP CHANGES THESE ARE ONLY A FEW OF MANY CHANGES THAT COULD CAUSE YOU TO LOOSE YOUR DEDUCTIONS.
BY STATE LAW, YOU ARE ONLY ELIGIBLE TO HAVE THESE DEDUCTIONS IN ONE COUNTY. SO, IF YOU WERE ALREADY RECEIVING A DEDUCTION IN ANOTHER COUNTY, IN THE STATE OF INDIANA, YOU WOULD NOT QUALIFY FOR THE DEDUCTION.
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO COME TO THE AUDITOR’S OFFICE, LOCATED ON THE 2ND FLOOR OF THE COURTHOUSE, TO FILE FOR A DEDUCTION: PLEASE CALL (765-653-5513), WE WILL MAIL THE FORM TO YOU.
