Green Acres is located about four miles east of Greencastle, just south of State Highway 240.  The home was built in 1835 and occupied in 1836. It was once called the "Poor Farm", however that name was changed a long time ago.

The county home is for people who aren't able to stay at home and care for themselves.  They may need help with medication and meals, but aren't quite ready for a nursing home.

Everyone who stays at the home pays part of their income for rent.  If they have little or no income there is a program called Assistance for Residents in County Homes (ARCH).  The current rate for people who can afford rent is $840.00 a month.

Each resident has their own room, but share the bathrooms.  Women are on the first floor and the men are on the second.  There is no elevator, so the men have to be able to climb the stairs.  Meals, laundry and cleaning of rooms are also provided and if the residents have no family to take them to doctors appointments, then someone at the home takes them.

If anyone is interested in the services please call 765-653-9528 and ask for Shirley Van Hook or Jody Henderson.  They will be happy to explain the process for new residents.  Or better yet just stop in and visit them ... they always welcome visitors!
