Reassessment Department

The Putnam County Reassessment Department was created in 1997 in preparation for the 1999 reassessment.  The department is now under the jurisdiction of the Assessor's Office and its purpose is to provide uniform and accurate assessments in all townships of Putnam County.  In order to accomplish this it is important to have a qualified and certified staff to properly address the changing laws in the field of assessment.

Our Mission Statement is:  “To provide uniform, equitable and unbiased assessment service to the property owners of Putnam County, Indiana in a courteous and timely manner.”

The Reassessment Department works closely with the Plat Office, Planning and Zoning Department and the County Assessor.  The department provides support for each Township Assessor by doing data collection and data entry for them.  After the leg work is completed, the township assessors approve the work before it is provided to the County Assessor.

For the 2002 Reassessment the data collection, data entry and review of assessments was completed in house instead of the county hiring an outside firm to process this work.  This is beneficial to the county taxpayer because for the first time ever there are county employees on staff who actually perform the work and understand the process.

The department is currently data collecting and entering information for new construction completed prior to March 1, 2006.  When this process is completed the information will be reviewed and approved by the Township Assessors and then forwarded to the County Assessor.  We are also verifying the information on all sales disclosures in order to update our records for future trending.  Trending is the process in which assessed values are reevaluated each year through the use of sales disclosures to better insure fair and equitable assessments.

If you, the taxpayer, have questions regarding land or buildings please call, email or visit our office.  We can provide information regarding the assessment of land and buildings.
