Process of Obtaining

Please Note: Handgun permit applications are no longer filled out at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Dept.


The process for obtaining or renewing a handgun permit starts online. To begin the the process you must go the Indiana State Police Firearms Licensing website. During the application process you will be given a chance to select a location to be fingerprinted. All fingerprinting for handgun licenses are done digitally and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Dept. does not perform this service. It is advised that you select a location to be fingerprinted while you are filling out the application.
Once you have filled out your application and have been fingerprinted you will then come to the Sheriff’s dept. Please bring your receipt (from being fingerprinted). You will also need to bring a photo ID (with your correct address) and correct amount of cash needed for the local fee.

If you live within City or Town limits you must apply for your permit through your local Police Dept.
